“At this moment in our country the black flag is most importantly anti-fascist and anti-nationalist which I have framed with the rainbow of diversity and inclusion,” Paul Jacobsen says of this work.

For the past decade, Jacobsen has consistently returned to the motif of the black flag, depicted in charcoal and allowing it to run. Since the 1880s, the black flag has been an anti-authoritarian symbol, representing the absence of and opposition to the nation state. This series not only addresses political concerns but directs the viewer’s attention to the meanings of the materials used to produce the work. These charcoal flags do not intend to depict the particular ideals of an economy with worker collectives, consumer cooperatives or an end to the military-industrial complex — instead, Jacobsen intends to display a moment of silence and of mourning.
